TYPES OF INDIAN BREEDS

India has a rich heritage of cultivating breeds of desi cows. A Gou or cow is said to be a storehouse of nutrients & medicines for nurturing living beings.

Different breeds of cows develop according to the distinct atmospheric & geographic conditions they live in. They vary in some attributes, but all show similar characteristics of hump & dewlap. Different breeds found in India are:

HALLIKAR (हल्लीकर)

Typical Mysore breed cattle; mainly found in Mysore, Mandy, Bangalore, Kolar, Tumkur, Hassan & Chitradurga districts of Karnataka. Hallikar is one of the best drought breeds in South India. Most of the present-day south Indian breeds have originated from this breed.

Punganur (पौगनुर)

Short-horned cattle found in Vayalpadu, Madanapalle & Palamaner taluk of Chilton, district of Andhra Pradesh. Used for agricultural operations on light soils. This breed is almost on the verge of extinction.

Malvi (मालवी)

Multi-purpose breed with its population covering a large area comprising Indore, Dewas, Ujjain, Shajapur & Mandsaur districts of Madhya Pradesh. Malvi bullocks are known for quick transportation & ability to carry heavy loads on rough roads. 

Nagori (नागौरी)

A reputed breed that originated in the Navin district of Rajasthan in Western Hulia & adjoining Jodhpur and Nokha districts, primarily reared for the draught quality of its bullocks. The population is remarkably decreasing since the dense use of bullocks is decreasing. 

Rathi (राठी)

Important milch breed found in the western part of Rajasthan. The original breeding tract lies in the Thar Desert & also in Bikaner, Ganganagar & Jaisalmer districts. 

Red Kandhari

Found in Kanpur and Nanded districts and parts of other districts like Ahmadpur, Parli & Hingoli tehsil of Latur district. Also in Bid, Parbhani districts of Marathwada region.

Sahiwal (साहीवाल)

Important dairy breed of zebu cattle. The original breeding tract lies in Pakistan, Firozpur & Amritsar (Punjab) towards the Indo-Pak border and Ganganagar (Rajasthan). It has been introduced to 17 other countries besides India & Pakistan; and has several names such as Lambi Bar, Lota, Multani, Montgomery, Teli, etc.

Khari (खेरी, खेरीगड़, खैरी)

This breed is closely related to the Malvi breed. It is also known as Kheri, Kherigarh & Khari. Mostly found in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh & also, in the adjoining Pilibhit district. The population of this breed has decreased considerably over the last few years.  

Shikari (मन्देशी, शिकारी)

Originating from the Hallikar or Amrit Mahal breed of cattle, this breed is known for the quick drought capabilities of its bullocks. Found in Kolhapur, Solapur, Sangli & Satara districts of Maharashtra and Belgaum, Bijapur district of Karnataka. 

Krishna Valley (कृष्णा वैली)

Named after the Krishna Valley, this breed is a heavy drought breed used exclusively in the black cotton soil of the watershed near river Krishna. Mainly found in Solapur, Sangli & Satara districts of Maharashtra, and Bijapur district of Karnataka.

Mewati (मेवाती)

This breed of cattle originated in the tract known as Mewat – comprising Alwar, Bharatpur districts of Rajasthan; Mathura, Kosi in Western UP and Faridabad, Gurgaon districts of Haryana. The mewati breed is also known as Kosi and Mehwati.

Ongole (औंगोले)

Hardy & disease-resistant cattle, which belong to the short-horned group of zebus that were brought by Aryans to India 4000+ years ago. The stock originated from the northwest to the Indus River basin and further to the Indo-Gangetic plains towards the south along the Godavari, Krishna & Perunar basins. 

Deoni (देवनी नस्ल)

Very popular dual-purpose breed from the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. The migration of Girs from Gujarat to Marathwada is believed as the reason for the Deoni breed’s origin. Other names are Dongerpati, Dongari, Wannera, Waghyd, Balankya & Shevera.

Gir (गीर नस्ल)

An excellent milch breed, globally renowned for its tolerance to stressful conditions and resistance to tropical diseases. This breed developed the capacity for yielding more milk with less nourishment as it adapted to scarcity for years. Gir cattle are also known as Bhodali, Desan, Gujarati, Kathiawari, Sorthi & Surati.  

Hariana (हरियाणा)

One of the most widely spread dual-purpose breeds in the Indo-Gangetic plains; their natural breeding tract encompasses large parts of Rohtak, Hissar, Jind & Gurgaon districts of Haryana. Closely related to Sahabadi & Gangatiri breeds of cattle & similar to the Gaolao, Mewati & Ongole breeds. Primarily reared for bullock production & widely distributed in Jodhpur, Alwar, Lohani & Bharatpur districts of Rajasthan & Meerut, Bulandshahr & Aligarh districts of western Uttar Pradesh.

Kankrej (काँकरेज)

Deriving its name from the Kankrej part of Gujarat, this breed is among the heaviest breeds of cattle in India. Mostly found in southeast Rann of Kutch comprising Mehsana, Ahmedabad, Kaira, Sabarkantha & Banaskantha district of Gujarat & Badmer, Jodhpur, district of Rajasthan. This breed plays an essential role in the economy of the region.

Vechur (वैचूर)

Found in Kerala, this breed is one of the dwarf cattle breeds in India. They are adaptable to the hot & humid climate of the area. The ICAR initiated a scheme for conserving this breed, considering its local importance. 

Tharparkar (थारपारकर)

Significant dual-purpose breed raised for its milking potential. Mostly found in areas near the Indo-Pak border, Western Rajasthan & Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. This breed is also known as White Sindhi, gray Sindi & Thari. 

Bargur (बरगूर नस्ल)

Mysore-type cattle which are compact but fierce. Light in build with great speed and endurance in trotting. Developed mainly for carrying out agricultural operations in uneven and mountainous terrain. Found around Bargur hills in Bharani Taluk of Erode district, Tamil Nadu.

Dangi (डांगी नस्ल)

Found in a small area of Nashik & Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra including the Dang area of Western Ghats, hence called ‘Dangi’. Also known as Kanada, Konkani & Ghoti. This breed adapts & works excellently in rice fields, hilly areas & regions with heavy rainfall.

Nimari (निमाड़ी)

Found in the Nimar tract of Narmada valley in Madhya Pradesh comprising Khandwa, Khargone & Barwani Districts. Also seen in the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra. Animals are active. Bullocks are known for their drought work. 

Red Sindhi (लाल सिंधी)

One of the important dairy cattle in the Indian sub-continent originated from Las Bela Cattle found in Malir outside Karachi. Mostly found in the Karachi and Hyderabad districts of Pakistan. Also found in Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Kerala & Assam in India. These cows are exported to many countries & are also called Malir (Balochistan), Red Karachi & Sindhi. 

Umblachery (उंब्लाचेरी)

One of the best cattle breeds, found in Thanjavur & Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu. A breed created by crossing Kangayam with local animals. These are light-built draught animals, specially developed for work in the marshy paddy fields. Umblachery cattle are also known as Therkathi Madu, Souther, Mottai Madu Tanjore, Molai Madu, Jathi Madu, etc.

Purnea (पोंवार)

Developed for drought work, this breed is small sized & its bullocks are swift in movements. Found in the Pilibhit district of U.P., Mainakot, Mazara, Barkhera, Faizulagani & Rajpur Semra villages. Also, in the Lakhimpur Kheri district. This breed is considered a good source of income due to its compact size and speedy maneuver.
