BENEFITS OF PANCHAGAVYA
Ancient Indian texts mention the description of a cow being the abode of all gods and the medium of achieving Dharma, Artha, Kama & Moksham. In Vedic literature, Prithvi is a synonym of Gou (cow). In ancient times, a man’s abundance was evaluated by the number of cows he possessed. History gives various evidence that the Indians were at the peak of health when the cow was respected and considered an avatar of God. The medicinal importance of products obtained from the cow is boundless. Panchgavya is an Ayurvedic formulation. It is a mixture of five products of the cow viz. milk, urine, dung, ghee & curd/ buttermilk. It possesses healing properties which can cure several disorders. Physicians from the Ayurveda system of medicine have been using remedies based on cow’s products, either separately or in combination as Panchgavya, for centuries. In recent years, results of scientific investigations in India and abroad into the medicinal and curative properties of these products have created a lot of enthusiasm and hope, as they could be potent anti-cancer and anti-HIV agents.
COW MILK
Cow milk touches practically all aspects of life. Milk is complete, balanced & healthy food for all, especially for children. It is a good source of natural calcium, reduces acidity, increases immunity & sharpens the brain. Cow milk forms a base for many ayurvedic medicines. Many products like curd, buttermilk, butter & clarified butter (Ghee), are made from cow milk. Cow milk contains all nutrients in a balanced proportion essential for growth in the form of five vital nutrients: fat, proteins, lactose (milk sugar), minerals & vitamins.
Desi Cow milk is A2 Type milk that helps fight diabetes in infants and adults. Ayurvedic classics such as Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Bhaisajya Ratnavali, and Arya-Bhishak describe different properties of cow products and their therapeutic potential. Cow milk’s potential to strengthen the seven Dhatus (tissues) such as Rasa (plasma), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), Meda (adipose tissue), Asthi (bone), Majja (bone marrow), and Shukra (reproductive tissue) is specified in Charak Samhita. The active constituents of cow milk, especially proteins, immunoglobulin & cytokines, are widely used in treating several physiological or metabolic disorders related to the brain, kidney, heart, and other organs.
These active constituents have a significant protective influence on the specific disease conditions of target organs, which modulates signaling pathways & other elements. Peptides derived from the digestion of cow proteins have demonstrated anti-cancer & anti-mutagenic properties, including mechanisms to mitigate DNA damage and apoptosis induction via both the extrinsic and intrinsic pathways. Lactoferrin is a major iron-binding glycoprotein in cow milk. Cow Urine (Go Mutra)
In Ayurvedic therapeutics, cow urine (Gomutra) is frequently referred to use because of its yearlong availability, cost-effectiveness & special sanctity attached to the Indian cows. In Charak Samhita, cow urine is mentioned as a regulator governing several abdominal and dermatological disorders such as itching (Kandu), eczema (Vicharchika), and acne vulgaris (Yauvanpidika). Similarly, Sushruta Samhita describes its properties as a cognition enhancer (Medhya). It is also mentioned as an aid in the reversal of certain cardiac (Hrid Roga), gastrointestinal (Udar Roga) & kidney-related problems (Randhawa and Sharma 2015 Steer 2019).
The active constituents of cow urine prevent the free radical formation, act as bioenhancer, reduce blood glucose, and efficiently repair the damaged DNA, thus showing anti-cancer and anti-diabetic efficacy. Animal urine is considered a waste product, but in the case of cows, it is the exact opposite. It is a boon to mankind, especially farmers. Cow Dung (Gomay)
A cow excreta which has the value of gold equal to its weight for farmers. Ancient scriptures mention “Gomaye Vasate Lakshmi” literally meaning Lakshmi – Goddess of Wealth & Prosperity dwells in Cow Dung. Dung has high micro-organismic value, which helps to increase the fertility and productivity of the soil. Cow Dung compost is a natural fertilizer. Many types of organic fertilizers can be made from cow dung. Cow dung is deemed fit for human consumption & is an integral part of many Ayurveda medicines. It has also demonstrated antifungal & anti-bacterial effects. Cow dung has a variety of uses, which have developed over a timespan such as fuel (bio-gas), purifier(antiseptic), floor coating, skin tonic, dhoopan for purifying the environment, mud additive, tooth polish, protection from harsh UV rays, etc.
